History of the Air Force Security Forces
(Military Police, Air Police, Security Police, Security Forces)

Since the beginning of the aviation influence on military operations the development of this new form of “Security Force” has evolved extensively.

Initially the aviation sector of the U.S. Armed Forces was a part of the U.S. Army and was known as the Air Service (May 24, 1918 through July 1, 1926) until it was replaced by the U.S. Army Air Corps (1926 – 1941) and was later known as the U.S. Army Air Forces (1941 – 1947).

On September 18, 1947 the U.S. Air Force (USAF) was established as the aerial warfare branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
